Minions

What we perceive to be minions are the adorable (to some, not so adorable) yellow pill-shaped beings. They have become absolutely popular. Their faces have been plastered all over advertisements, banners, shirts, badges, cups, bags and many more. They even have their own movie. Before I chase away those yellow minion haters, what I really want to talk about today is the minions of the world. Minions as in slaves bounded and ordered around by a leader.

The first image of minions that appear in my head come in tie and blazer. These dark blue clothed specimens have become like brainless creatures that listen to commands of an authority. Not many of them act on their own or act with persistence and such dedication as before. They follow orders and seem to not know how to function when on the job. I cannot fathom how these humans who have brains of their own only know how to listen to the advisers watching over them. What I experienced seeing was a disappointment.

Let us say there is student ,1 minion(M) and 1 advisor(A).

A gives some eye signals to M, asking it to go to the student.

M walks over.

M: Please close your books.

The student responds slowly to the annoying hindrance who barely shows any persistence.

M looks at A.

M looks at the student.

M looks at A.

A: Take the book.

M(to the student): Give me the book.

M looks at A.

M does not know what to do with the book.

M looks at student.

M looks at A and just stands there looking like an absolute idiot.

M looks at A.

A: Keep the book and return later.

M nods and she wants to leave but A gives her signals to take another few students' books.

At least now, she knows what to bloody do.

How pathetic can these minions be! Why are they minions in their own group of workers? Why don't they know what they are supposed to do? Have they not gone through training or graduated to earn that title? It is a shame that they are put out there to organize others when they cannot even arrange their own person. This is not meant to be a post filled with hatred and complaints but a post signifying my disgust for the mindless bodies of minions of society has become.

We have become sheep that move when people ask us to. We have forgotten how to push ourselves and the people around us and thrive for improvement. We have lost the motivation or reason of what we do everyday. We need to question our reasons of taking us the responsibilities we have. We need to ask ourselves whether we still want to be in that place. Do we still wants to be unmindful beings and heedlessly carry out our daily activities. We need to think hard and not neglect anything we do.

Rarely do we find men who willing engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think.

Librarian Annual High Tea

Dressed in gorgeous, stylish and dazzling outfits, both male and female librarians looked fit for a runway. These models were lined up in our noisy school canteen ready for their debut at the Swiss Garden Hotel. From body con dresses to basics with a dash of spice, everyone looked chic. The girls dolled up nicely and the guys looking suave(you could say they were close enough). We all patiently awaited our transportation to the hotel as we chatted away with our friends. Not forgetting the many photos and selfies taken then as well as throughout the day. Sadly, our transport for late. When we managed to get onto the bus, all 50+ of us clambered on and got on our way. We hilariously had to stop by the road and let the some get onto the other bus.

When we reached the hotel, we got off and made our way to Flavours Restaurant. We got to our seat , put down our things and started our marvellous experience. For one, I started on the Asian corner. They served plain porridge, cream of mushroom soup, fried spiced chicken, prawn, garlic rice and the noodle corner. The middle of the restaurant was a salad bar, cendol station and seafood corner. I tried oyster for the first time. I did not exactly become a fan of it. Outside the restaurant were the small stalls which were part of the buffet. Closest to the entrance of the restaurant was the roasted lamb. Might I say that it was scrumptious! We had in with rosemary sauce and mint sauce.

Next, was the Chinese cuisine. I had a variety of what they were serving. The scallop they served was memorable. The popiah with duck was enjoyable too. Moving on was the Thailand cuisine if I was not mistaken. There was pandan roasted chicken and durian rolls. I absolutely loved them both. The durian roll is something I would recommend for any durian lover. Even non-durian lovers should give them a try if you do not hate the taste of durian. Lastly was the Malaysian food, there was murtabak, roti canai, beef satay, chicken satay and naan bread. All the sauces served too of course.

Last but not least is the dessert corner! My favourite part of a meal. They had a good array of Malay kuih, French pastries and some typical desserts including fruits. I tried the kuih serimuka, ondeh, red velvet cake, carrot cake, pineapple crumble tart, mochi and the traditional longan coconut water.
The food was delightful for the amount of money we paid. We took many photos and I got some nice shots on my camera. We managed to go up to the swimming pool of Swiss Garden Hotel and snap some photos including our group photo. It was a splendid 6 hours spent with my friends waiting, eating and digitally recording the moments in history together. I shall miss spending a few hours of one day every year stuffing our tummies till our hearts' content.

SPM 2006

Q: The writer describes the main character as a very determined person. (character)
    Write about:
        - Some instances that show the character’s determination
        - How the determination affects his / her family

A:
After reading the novel step by wicked step by Anne Fine, I find that the character Colin is a very determined person. Here are some reasons how Colin show his determination and how it affects his / her family.

First and foremost, Colin’s biological father left him when he was merely a few weeks old. His mother then remarries with a man name Jack. Thus, Jack became his stepfather when Colin was only 8 months old. They did many things together. Jack would walk Colin to school or even go to the park with him during the evenings. Sadly, good things don’t last long. Colin’s mother had some marital problems with Jack since he refuses to get a proper job. This caused Colin’s mum to leave Jack without saying goodbye and without Colin being aware of it. Colin also lost his concentration and will to do well in school and many of hid quarrels with his mum started because of this.

This has cause Colin to hate his mum for doing so and hated his new school. Colin misses his stepfather very much and he was determined to see him again. He even remembers how long it has been since he last saw his stepfather. “Five years, 8 months and seven days.” Colin was so determined that he takes the time to write a letter to Jack, sadly he did not get a reply. “I wrote a letter…There was no answer.” He misses him so, that even though he does not know how to skate he still goes to the skating ring to listen to Jack’s favourite song – “The Bluebird of Happiness”. That is because the skating rink would play the song repeatedly. “Every forty five minutes,” Colin corrects Claudia in the novel. Colin only hums the song; he had made a vow not to sing it unless Jack returns. “I’m saving the words till I find him.”

Colin is determined that Jack would come and find him one day, that he still keeps the boots with the tobacco tin in it, as it reminded him of Jack. Sadly, his unaware mum had thrown it away. Colin’s determined to grow up fast and save enough money to allow him to have the ability to find his stepfather one day. “As soon as I’m tall enough, I’m off.” He even does three paper rounds to save more money. “I even do three paper rounds.”

Although, we could clearly see that Colin is very determined to find his stepfather, his determination had affected his relationship with his mother. It started when Colin’s mother had left in a sudden and kept their whereabouts as a secret.

There was also a few times where Colin and his mother argued as Colin did not understood why his mother can’t get along with Jack. As in Colin’s eyes Jack is an amazing father figure that takes care of him. However, in reality Jack and Colin’s mother have marital issues as he does not want to go out and look for a proper job to sustain the families finance. “You only saw his good side,” said Colin’s mother in the novel during the argument.

When they moved to a new place, Colin started suffering from a lack of a father figure. He misses his stepfather so much that even though years have passed Colin still talks to him although he is not around. Colin also started saving up money just to try to find his stepfather in the future. His mum is unaware as she is so caught up with her own problems that she does not see his suffering.

In conclusion, we can see that Colin was a very determined person because he persevered in his decision to keep his stepfather in his heart and even took up part time jobs to save up for his journey to look for his father. This decision affected his relationship with his mother negatively and they have tiffs over it.

Q : How a character changed...

Q : How a character changed due to certain event that have taken place in his/her life.

A:
After reading the novel Step by Wicked Step by Anne Fine, I find that Colin has changed due to a certain event that has taken place in his life. The story is about these five children that find Richard Harwick's story. They read it then take turns to share their own stories about how they deal with their dysfunctional families. Colin's story reveals that he has changed drastically ever since his mother moved him away from his stepfather.

Colin has changed into a very unhappy and lonely boy. Colin had to join a new school when his mother moved out of their home with him. He is becomes a new kid in his class. He has to go through unpleasant experiences. He gets ignored in school as the students had their own set of friends. He finds it hard to fit in. "Nobody bothered with me" The other students only sniggered when Colin did not understand what they were doing. His mother had also neglected him. She was busy with her job at the canteen and her household chores. She had no time to listen to his problems.

Secondly, Colin becomes a dreamy boy which causes him to have less focus in class. Thus he does badly in school. He misses his dad very much. He ends up thinking very deeply about his dad during class. Every night, he would take the tobacco tin out of the toe of his boot and put it under his pillow. Colin would hum their favourite song and stay awake for hours talking to his dad. He would pretend that his dad was there. "I'd pretend that he was there with me. And I could talk to him, just like before."

Lastly, Colin becomes resourceful after his mother's separated his stepfather and him. It has been 5 years, 8 months and 7 days since he was separated from his dad. He secretly writes his dad's name and his old address on the forms at school.  "I always secretly sneak his name and our old address on all the forms that Mum's filled in for school..." He tries to save money. He even does three paper rounds to earn money to search for his dad when he is older. “I even do three paper rounds.”

In conclusion, at first Colin responded negatively to the changes in his life. He was sad, dreamy in school and moody. Finally he decided to do something worthy to search for his dad like doing paper rounds and saving every penny he gets. His love and longing for his dad motivated him to become optimistic, resourceful and patient in his mission : search for his dad.

Annual General Meeting

AGM. This year was my 5th AGM. Time sure has flown by.In 2011, I became a librarian with Rachel Wong, Ming Yen, Jia Yinn, Ching Wei, Zhi Ying, Ghee Shaun and many others. We sang "Here In My Home" for our official appointment of being a librarian. We have been with the librarian board for so many years. From our first one day camp to our last one that we organized this year, many memories have been made.

Today we have finally stepped down from our posts and passed on the committee to our juniors. We hope that they will uphold the discipline and ethnic of librarians. At 12.30pm, we gathered at the library. Juniors were all lined up outside in their ties and tags awaiting to be seated in the library. Row and rows of empty chair awaited the arrival of their behinds. The AGM began with a few announcement and some words from our teacher advisor, Puan Monica. The best librarian, best shift and librarians with the most merits were awarded with their prizes. Then, each form 5(except for two shy ones) starting with Ching Wei took turns and gave a small speech. We only hope that the juniors will absorb our words of wisdom and put them to good use.

Next, the form 4s presented us with tokens of gratitude. We all got a drawing of ourselves in a specially decorated wooden frame and an envelope with dear messages from them. We continued with the dissolving of the old AJK board and the announcement of the new one. The form 5s stepped down one by one according to their departments. It was a heart warming sight of hugs and heirlooms passed down from one department head to a new one. The event moved on with the presentation made by the form 5s and the video by the form 4s in memory of the retiring librarians.

After that was celebratory meal. Cupcakes of three different flavours, drinks and a poppy seed cake was served. All handmade by the talented juniors of ours. After a miniature photo taking session, we ended the session and grabbed lunch. By the time we came back, our last mandatory shift of the year was over! It was a happy day and we were finally relieved of the responsibilities of being a librarian. Today is the day that marks the end of our years of slavery and work but not the end of our friendships.

Q : Compare two characters

Based on the novel "Step by Wicked Step", written by Anne Fine, there are many different character. The novel is about 5 children that share their stories about how they handle their broken families after reading Richard Harwick's story. I am going to compare and contrast Richard and Colin. There are clear similarities and differences which can be observed throughout the story.

Firstly, Richard and Colin both love their dads. They both missed their fathers. Richard at times misses his father and sits by his father's grave. "Sometimes I sit beside my father's grave and I run my fingers over the letters of his name..." However, Richard's father died while Colin's mother brought Colin and moved away without the stepfather's knowledge. Richard had lost his father forever and he wanted to tell his father so many things. "...stamp to wake him up and tell him all the things that had gone wrong since he was taken from us." Meanwhile, Colin was still searching for his stepfather. He is very determined to find him. Colin remembered the exact date his father left. "Five years, eight months and seven days."

Secondly, they similarly are ignored by their mothers. They both did not get any attention from their mothers. Colin's mother is unaware of how he day dreams in school. Richard's mother did not show any form of care towards Richard. Both of them did not feel their mothers' love. The two boys differ in the ways their mother had neglected them. In Richard's case, his mother did not defend him when Reverend Coldstone treated him badly. This shows his mother does not pay attention to her child Richard. She do not defend Richard when Reverend Coldstone sends him to boarding school.  "All that my mother did was lower her eyes, or look away..." Richard feels she has become a traitor. "...I believe she is a traitor to my father's memory." In Colin's case, his mother is unaware how much he missed his stepfather because she is too busy working at the canteen and doing household chores.

Lastly, Richard and Colin believe that running away is a solution. Both of them decided that running away will make things work. In contrast, Richard ran away from home with the hope that he would make life more pleasant for everyone. "Mother, I think, would find life more pleasant without my dark looks and scowling face..." "Mr. Coldstone would greet my disappearance with pleasure." "As for Charlotte, she would, I am sure, learn to live without me..." Colin has plans to run away to find his stepfather. He has saved up every penny. He even does three paper rounds. "I keep practically every penny that comes my way. I even do three paper rounds." In the end, Richard realizes that running away does not solve any problems. He goes home to find everyone is dead through Charlotte's letter that was left for him. "...send this letter to our old home, to tell you why you return to cold, cold silence." Colin is still waiting for the time he is old enough to run away. "As soon as I'm tall enough, I'm off."

As a conclusion, the two characters suffered much pain and sorrow. These two boys do not received enough love for boys their age. No one cares about them or how they felt. No one is there to hear their thought out and advise them. This could have changed Richard's life differently if his mother had done so and provided attention, love and care. Sadly they did not, while Colin has not, realised that running away does not solve problems. In fact, running away can affect the people around you and burden them in many ways just like in Richard's story. Acting out of impulse like Richard has damaged his family. We need to think wisely before making a serious decision in life.

Music is life

I have always been fascinated with music. It amazes me that music can take a person out of their ordinary life and place them in a world of their own imagination. It amazes me that people have collaborated over time to create this beautiful form of expression. For me, it is precisely the thrill and excitement of being taken on a musical journey .

I remember my first experience with music was my mother playing her CDs filled with love songs on the radio in our hall. I remember specifically listening to the romantic melodies that have made me into such a romantic today. Ever since that initial impression became solidified in my imagination many years ago, music has became a form of release for me. Even if I am having the most stressful day of my life I can turn to music and all my problems dissipate.

I started singing when I was 7. It was the first time I faced my stage fright head on. I loved singing and I just wanted to show the world how good I could be. I remember getting consolation awards throughout my years in primary school. The singing competitions they had every year were a highlight for me. I was amazed by the winners, the school choir and many pop singers that reigned supreme on radio channels.

With each year my love for music grows. Every new journey I discover through a new song always leaves me feeling such deep emotion. When I make music with the instrument I was born with, I feel a deep connection to the form of creation. When I began singing in choir, I loved it straight away. The melodies were not impressive at first but if I held on long enough, that would change. I knew I did not have great listening and a strong voice at the start but after 5 years of solid training with Harmonix Youth Choir, I have become much better.

I have had times when I've sat down to study and could not get my mind in the right place. I would play the music that I loved. The different genres had so many different purposes. Music could calm and to sleep. I could drift away into sleep with music, it felt as though awaking to a dark sky just like in a dream. Sometime I wonder if I could have been a Musician in a previous lifetime, or conducting a symphony. Music is truly the most beautiful form of creation I have found to date and it will stick with me all my life.

Malaysian Mental Literacy Movement MIND Competition 2015

Do you know how to use the enormous power of your brain? These professional people who participate in MIND Competition sure do! The competitions branched into three main ones which are the memory competition which consists of 4 different categories (random words, random numbers, random alphabets and random dates and events ), mind mapping competition which has 3 sections (given topic, speech and text) and mental calculation. I participated in the random words memory competition and mind mapping.

These competitions were very interesting experiences. During the mind mapping competition, Shu Ming, who is an ex student from my high school who has won in the competition before, sat beside me. It was such a coincidence! We managed to talk to her just before the competition started. If not mistaken, she had been taking part in this competition for close to 5 years. Her mother was champion twice in a row before this year so she was not allowed to take part this year.

I learned the skill of pencilling in the game sudoku. It was so exhilarating. Now I know, how to solve those advanced sudoku's if I have some time on my hands. I even met this guy who is an International Master of Memory. Not many people have this title. He even offered to give talks in my school on how to help memorising. He told me our brains have very powerful visual memory and not so great verbal memory. So when memorising things, we should picture it in our head. I have become fond of mind mapping and visual memory since then. It has really changed me in how I memorise things. It is a great skill to pick up.

The competition really puts your memory to the test. 4 pages with 60 words each to be memorised. I could barely make one page. Haha! Everyone starts from somewhere so I plan to improve myself in that aspect to be ready for next year's competition. I would suggest this event to anybody. It is open to all ages and was only RM10 year if you were not registering under a school. It was an enlightening journey and it really taught me many things including how tiring solely brain activities are.

Family Day Out!

Raya is here and everyone has gone back to their home towns. KLCC and the huge grounds of Kuala Lumpur are pretty much occupied by the tourists and people of all ages and races. My family took up this chance to visit our beautiful Malaysian capital - Kuala Lumpur. We drove down to Kanna Curry House early in the morning to grab some delicious Indian breakfast. If you have not been there, you have to try the branch at Seksyen 17. I absolutely love their thosai. The curries they serve are mouth watering and you just cannot get enough.

After a worthy breakfast, we drove down to Kuala Lumpur. Passing the huge bridge that separates Selangor and Kuala Lumpur on one of the oldest highways which was once the only way to go down to KL. It was fun having my mother as our own tour guide. We passed Masjid Negara and the National Textile Museum. We stopped by at the Majestic Hotel which  is this old revamped hotel that has a beautiful interior. My mother insisted it was really nice inside so we parked somewhere across the road and went in.

We drove down and stopped at Dataran Merdeka. We parked our car there and got out to explore. We walked down the road and visited Central Market (Pasar Seni). We walked the long rows of stores and I dropped by to visit my friend Christopher at his father's camera store. We also walked down to Petaling Street and drank the air mata kucing that my mother suggested. Refreshing on a humid day like today. My mother also told us the story of her boss treating her to chicken rice in Petaling Street. Sadly, the store had been replaced by another store after all these years.

We drove down and parked around Pavillion. We walked over and admire the many high end restaurant & bistros. We walked through and made our way to the front of the mall. We even dropped by Sephora. They had some of the very expensive branded products. We visited Lot 10 and KLCC after lunch. When we reached KLCC, we went out to the beautiful huge park that they have. There were plenty of cosplayers to my surprise. Apparently, there was a cosplay competition held in the POPULAR Bookfest. We explored the 6 halls of books and stationary at the bookfest. We stopped at a booth selling designed paper punches. The stationary and etcetera section was what my brother and I browsed through the longest. We bought a shoe bag, whole bunch of stationary, an umbrella, biscuits and some other things too.

We finally went home after hours and hours of walking, shopping and going out and about. It was a good day and I enjoyed visiting Kuala Lumpur's hot spots after so long. It was my first time at Pasar Seni and Petaling Street. I am glad to have experienced these new places with my family. Hopefully, we can go there again sometime soon. It was a great family day out!

Sunway University Open Day

Today, I attended the Sunway University Open Day. It was my first time at a university for an open day. I hitched a ride with Hui Yan along with Jun Ren after our class photo taking session at school. It was an enlightening experience. Recently, I was interested in taking up actuarial science so I had some research to do and what pathways that Sunway Uni offered. When Hui Yan, Jun Ren and I reach the entrance of the new building. We were greeted by student ambassadors that lead Jun Ren to the talks and workshop regarding his interests while Hui Yan and I got to talk to a counsellor about ACCA and ICAEW.

I attended the jobs in financial services talk which started at 11 in the morning with Hui Yan, Kai Ning (even though she was not interested), Hao Zhe and Jia Yong. Jia Yinn also showed up with her parents. I found the idea of taking the course and job prospects interesting but I still have my doubts about selling my soul to actuarial science.

After that talk, Kai Ning went for her science talk about neuroscience and bio med while the rest of us took a campus tour. We went to the IT labs and took a career personality test which determined our interests. I found out I may be more interested in Arts than any other thing. Sometimes I wonder whether I seem like a artsy creative student. I still had the heart to be take up graphic design. Next, we visited the physics labs and explored the animal exhibition. We saw Ariff there and his pet iguana. We saw the different types of snake, geckos, hamsters, an adorable rabbit and a green frog that jumped onto Kai Ning's leg.

Then we got on our way to visit the art labs as I was interested. The rest of them tagged along and we pretty interested in the building models made by the interior design students. Sadly, we missed the talk at 1pm and grabbed a little bit of lunch before we parted our ways. We rushed off to the 2pm talks as we were already late. At first, I wanted to attend the ACCA and ICAEW talk but that little voice in my heart whispered to me and managed to convince me to attend the other talk. I made a rash decision and made my way to the communications talk without realising it was for mass comm and other forms of communication.

I was so embarrassed when I picked up my things and left the talk after a good 10 minutes. I ran back to the Sunway college building for the think differently art and design workshop. I missed pretty much the first half of the workshop. All I can remember was the speaker talking about how parents think there is no market in the artistic industry. Then he told us to design a logo of our future business. All I could think of was that logo I did two years ago for Art Class. It was the logo of a tea cup made of  "C"s of different shapes and sizes in multiple orientations. The design was an improved version of the previous one. I knew it was a logo where minimal colours were to be used. Simple and interesting but still told a message.

I thought the girl who thought of the sheer black "Mash" fashion store logo would win the small challenge. Surprisingly, I did. I laughed at myself in my head. Fate really brings nice surprises sometimes. I won a Sunway art and design department t-shirt. Gladly they had an S size which I could fit into. I was proud of myself but I did not really learn much other than learning from the other participants there.

I got to know Hui Ting. She is from Subang Utama and I met some of the girls from that school earlier this year during the INTI Science Quiz. She was a nice girl. She also left the communications talk and made her way to this one. I walked back to the new building. I found my mother talking to Jun Ren. Then the rest of them found us and they went off on their own. I stayed with mother and we managed to see counsellors for the Foundation in Arts for Pre-University studies. We also got the chance to speak to the head of the art department, Mr. Augustine Wong. It was nice to speak to a professional about it.

Today was a great experience but I still have not gotten to the decision of the lifetime. No matter what decision is I shall make the best of it. With passion, you can excel in what you love.

Catholic High Choir Exchange

Last week, this week, next week and one month after that! Choir events here and there have filled up my schedule. Yesterday, the participating choir members gathered in the school canteen at 8 in the morning. I chewed on some freshly prepared kaya and margarine bread as I walked to school. The cars on the roads scarce. Barely a soul seen on the roads. Inside school grounds, it was a different story. A whole group of the purple clothed choir kids were in the canteen. Mickeymitez had already began their practice and the basketball team had began perspiring under the warm morning sun.

We made our way to the hall for a short practice before we boarded the bus and departed for Catholic High. When we reached, we were greeted by two ushers near the gate that lead us to their Dewan Kuliah. We were pleasantly welcomed by a group of students from Catholic High choir. It was quite a nice surprise. There was a red carpet and confetti poppers too. When we entered the hall, the two others BUD4 and Bukit Bintang were already there. The rest of Catholic High was waiting for us inside the hall.

The event started with grabbing a partner. I partnered up with my old primary school friend Pei Lin! It was a long time since we saw each other. I enjoyed the few hours we were able to talk and share our experiences. She is in a youth chamber choir called Singaholics. I am guessing they are the Subang Jaya Chamber Choir as they are under Young Choral Academy too. We played a few games then proceded to the sectionals. We separated to our respective rooms. After that was combined practice which was followed by the school tour.

I enjoyed the school tour because we got to see interesting places like the Harmonica and Guitar Band room. It was a room which was at the back of the hall and has a ladder leading up no the ceiling. We had a short performance from one of the band members. I also made a few friends. We made it back for the prize-giving, performances and combined song. Then we took a mountain pile of photos with the Catholic High Choir peeps.

In conclusion, the whole trip was very enjoyable. Even though there were some inconveniences, it was still a good experience. This was an event held by the students for the students. We had fun and everyone went home all smiles. We grabbed our lunch and piled back into the bus to go back to school. It was a great morning well spent singing with people who love music as much as I do.

13th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod 2015

An eisteddfod is a Welsh festival of literature, music and performance. For 13 years and running, Young Choral Academy has organized a choral eisteddfod in various parts of Malaysia. The event has an impressive history which consists of different festival lengths, different symposiums for children and youth choirs and many outstanding tutors and guest conductors that come from all over the world. This year, the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod(MCE) Youth Symposium was held at Sri Kuala Lumpur, Selangor on the 13th and 14th of June. It was a great way to end the mid year holidays with a bang.

The guest conductor this year was Timothy Cloeter, Associate Professor of Choral Conducting at Bowling Green University, Ohio, USA. He is a sensational conductor! He taught us about the hidden meanings of the songs we sang which are "If Music Be the Food of Love" and "Carry Your Heart with Me". I am speechless to how patient and interesting a conductor he can be. Even his warm ups were delightful. He taught us to use our hands during warm ups to help with our pitching and flow of notes. He also enlightened us about the nine notes scale. It can also be sang in canon.

We first learned the song within our parts during sectionals with the tutors on the first day. Then we had a combined session with Mr. Cloeter. It was very enjoyable to be able to work with him. He taught us countless things like manipulating tempo and volume to intensify a song. He made us stick to the markings on the score pretty strictly but also conducted in a free manner with an open heart and full of expression. He never once made us feel incompetent during the combined sessions.

After that, it was lunch! The meal every participant must have been waiting for. Everyone queued up in a long line for our chicken rice, roasted chicken, stir-fried bean sprouts, popiah and soup. It made up a very palatable meal after those few long hours of hard work. After lunch, we were then separated for the masterclass with the respective tutors. We got paired up with Tenby International School, Ipoh and our tutor was Miss Liu / Liew (it sounds something like that). She turns out to be Miss Tracy's best friend. She advised us and gave really good pointers after we sang "Let the River Run. I met some really nice people from Tenby like Emily, Nicole and Wan Wei.

Next was the second combined session we had with Mr. Cloeter. He then worked on the specific rests he wanted us to focus on and utilized the parts with rallentendo(slowing down) in the songs. He also taught us the ending part of Loch Lomond. It was very fun. The guys and altos made up this bouncy tune while sopranos chirped the catchy melody of Loch Lomond. The announcements for tomorrow's closing concert was given and we gaily left the school.

The next morning was concert day! When we reached the school, everyone assembled in the hall and Mr. Cloeter conducted our warm ups once more. Then we were arranged on the stage and floor according to our voice parts. It was a packed stage with over 300 choristers crowding together. Shu Xie and I were trapped behind two rows of sopranos with our back to the piano. It was not the most comfortable position we could be in. During performance it was worse! We were packed like sardines and we felt highly ill at ease in that position. I, for one, have slight claustrophobia and it was horrendous to be squashed there.

The concert was amazing and I revel in the euphonious music we heard. The Sam Tet boys really knew how to put on a show. Their rendition of a Pentatonix song was stupendous. I was particularly fond of the songs that USJ 13 and Seafield sang. SMK Seafield's conductor, Gaya(that is what I call her) sang a solo with the choir supporting her. Their performance of an arrangement of "Hey, Soul Sister"(if not mistaken) and that solo was mellifluous. The concert ended with our combined songs and awarding of certificates. It was one of the most enjoyable festivals I have been to. I will never forget this year's MCE.

Self confidence?

Where has thy confidence gone?
The battle has barely been won.
You used to believe in yourself.
Why not now?
You may wonder how
To get back that confidence
And say goodbye bad habits. Good riddance!

You toss and turn all night long
Thinking about the things you might do wrong.
You stress about not being good enough.
Was THAT was your best?
You should offer no less
To be better than the rest!
If you would put down that phone,
get on those books.

Motivation? Where has that gone?
If you had it, half the battle's won.
Don't give up now,
You've barely started.
Focus on your life.
Not just live but thrive.
You used to have confidence and bravery. Where has that gone?
Better change that soon,
Before you meet your doom.

Beware of the road bullies!

ROAD RAGE! Raging on the road and endangering other people. Road bullies out there make people feel uneasy and unsafe. They display aggressive or angry behaviour by rude gestures, verbal insults, deliberate unsafe driving, threats and in worst cases, violence. They intentionally harm or pressure other drivers mentally, physically or cause damage. What are appropriate forms of punishment for road bullies?

These are forms on punishments that are given for different crimes under different situations. Firstly, you should fine these road bullies on their first offence. This is depending on how dangerous the driver is. As the road bullies repeat their actions, this fine should increase to the maximum then taking other steps. This fine would be a reminder to the road bullies of their bad behaviour or wrong doings. As the fines increase, the holes in their pockets become bigger. They will start to feel the pinch for their less serious crimes. This is a form of prevention too before it escalates in to something dangerous like causing accidents that kill.

Next is revoking a person’s license. With their crimes justified, there offenders can no longer drive for a certain period of time. These road bullies that exert pressure on other drivers and make them uneasy with their actions like beginner drivers should be treated like one. They shall face a penalty time that is based on their crime. This gives them ample time to reflect on their crime and hopefully make them change their ways. If in worse case, one can make them retake for the exams after the revoking of their license.

Thirdly is jailing a person. Jailing a person for an amount of time gives them more time to reflect. This also keeps them away from being a bad example to the society. Of course, this form of punishment has the process of police catching them red handed. This is also supported by proof through trial and court. How to punish them in jail? Send them to detention. This is a way to calm them and make them think of their wrong doings. They key to this is counselling and rehabilitation which lead to my next point.

Counselling and rehabilitation is a great way to help these road bullies. Trained counsellors can help them to express and manage their anger which they express through reckless driving and aggressive behaviour.  Most of the times, the source of the road rage is suppressed anger, love or family problems, wanting to attract their families’ attention, stress and bad parent role models. In rehabilitation, the aim is to correct their behaviour so they can turn over a new leaf and go back out in the world. This is a proper form of punishment for those who drive dangerously on the road.

The point of all these punishments is to reduce the cases of road bullying to the maximum. There will never be a perfect way to completely stop there road bullies as there will always be some extreme cases. All I ask is for drivers to be mindful of their actions and be aware that other drivers are human too because to err is human. We make mistakes and we forget sometimes. Forgive and forget the actions of people on the road unless it is life threatening or dangerous. Till next post, cheers!

Stress?

Many teenagers today are stressed out because of various factors. What do you think is a major cause of stress to teenagers?

Before I start on the causes, stress is caused by stressors which are events that occur in your life. There are good and bad stressors. Identifying these good and bad stressors can help us to prioritize our life and help us figure out stress techniques before harm. What happens when we get stressed? Firstly, our neurotransmitters start to fail as the stress overloads. The neurotransmitters that control our body clock shut down. This causes you to experience sleeplessness and leads to insomnia in most cases. Next is our energy level will drop and we end up not wanting to get things done. Last but not least, the neurotransmitters in the pleasure part of the brain will malfunction. This leads to sadness and depression. Your body will end up shutting down and making it harder to combat stress.
The first major cause of stress is family problems. Family problems range from petty quarrels between siblings to huge scale divorce and extreme cases of abuse. From a small scale, the bickering within siblings can be stressful. Your siblings are the people you see at home and grew up with together. You tend to have strong emotional connection with them and you feel distressed when they are unhappy or sad or angry, it is even worse when that anger or unhappiness is caused by the disagreement between siblings. This leads to minor stress from family problems. On a larger scale, quarrels between parents and relative also lead to stress. You feel incapable of doing anything as a teen to deal with these adult matters. You get frustrated, sad and just plain angry at yourself and this contributes to the stress teens feel all the time. The underlying problems there lead to a divorce where could end cause the family to end up in smithereens. Physical and mental abuse of a parent on a child also causes stress on a teen which already faces self-esteem problems.

Next, there is stress that comes from trying your best to keep your grades up. Everyone has expectations and also pressure from others to achieve them. This is clear when we talk about teens. Teens are expected to be diligent, hardworking and have good grades. When it comes to the top students, they stress about getting those As and those above average aim for the As and Bs. No one wants to get bad results so they stress about getting better than they had before or at least equal. This stress motivates us to study but at times it can be overwhelming.

Thirdly, romantic relationships cause stress to teenagers. These days you see puppy love in the air and lots of people are in relationships. The ones which are single and overwhelmed with friends who are all lovey-dovey can be affected by peer pressure.  Everyone is in a relationship and I am still single? This causes stress because everyone wants to belong in their group of friends and not be the odd one out. The teenagers who just broke up from a relationship experience stress too. In the process of breaking up or starting one can be stressful for the teens involved. Most teens have not reached a level of maturity or stable emotional developed brain to handle strong emotions like romantic love or heart break. When these strong emotions come on, they tend to feel distraught in a break up or confused with feelings of another individual. The stress of thinking about it and contemplating all the possible factors are apparent. Other than that, those relationships are not always smooth sailing and teens experience rollercoaster-like emotions sometimes due to the connected feelings between two individuals. They feel sad because the one they care for is depressed about something. The long list of emotions goes on.

Fourthly, one’s financial state also brings about the worry and stress. As a teen, you have lots of expenses like school expenses, books, stationary, food and more. If the teen is poor and faces financial despair, this could cause worry that leads to stress. The worry of not being able to have money for the next meal they have is nagging at the back of their heads. They worry more on how to earn money or a part time job if they do have one instead of focusing on school work and activities. Financial state plays a big part because this world of ours runs on the pieces of printed paper we call money.

Stress in our lives cannot go away forever. We have to learn how to combat it and deal with it before it gets out of hand. So take up those yoga classes, go for a run, play some games or have a laugh! Invest in a small teddy as a stress ball. That is what I did but the teddy was a gift. Release the stress you have by doing something you love. Sing a song and maybe watch a movie or just go and talk to someone about your problems. The internet is also a great place to express your feelings as an anonymous person. Get your life going and don’t let stress weight you down too much. Cheer, till next post!

Literature Camp 2015

"That is the end of the first national level Literature Camp 2015," said Miss Juliana.

I spent a day almost 12 hours busying myself with this national level event which my friends and I worked hard to plan. The many visits to University Malaya, meetings and preparations for the book sharing, Literature Race were all a bunch of fun.

The day stated before the sun has awoken and the committee members, photographers, teachers dressed in our blue T-shirt, Red Crescent members in their white neat uniforms and the students of 5 Balau in casual clothing gathered in school. I remember being too excited to sleep the night before, no idea why. It was a big thing unlike anything that we've ever planned before. I rush out to school on my yellow bicycle after having a substantial breakfast. It was not enough of a breakfast later I realised. How nice it was to have my stomach grumbling for food after the race was over. We departed to our destination, the education faculty of University Malaya. When we arrived, we all climbed up to the administration block to meet our teachers bustling about giving out goodie bags and breakfast to the registered contestants.

Once we got our breakfast and got the green light from Madam Monica, our teacher-in-charge of the event, we headed out to set up our stations. The race lasted a really really long time (it felt like forever). Not only were the bugs and "invisible" mosquitoes unbearable but the humid weather made us sweaty and sticky. Gladly, once the day creeped closer to noon, the bugs and mosquitoes went away. During the race, my station was pretty boring truthfully. It was a more exciting interpretation to test the participants' knowledge on two of the many poems they were instructed to read - "There's Been A Death In The Opposite House" and "For My Old Amah". It made the play treasure hunt on some stairs with rails. Then classifying and figuring out the representation of the clues they found. Some of the groups were highly enthusiastic when they were searching for the clues. Sadly, many of them missed that one clue pasted behind the instructions that were on a pole.

After the race, we had lunch. Before the next activity began, I got to know some interesting people. Some girls from Tunku Kurshiah College, Malay name Maktab Perempuan Melayu, is a premier boarding school located in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. I talked to Liyana, Shifaq and Asmah from that school. The girls were knowledgable and outspoken for 15 and 16 year olds. I half-expected them to be 17 like me but I then realised that not everyone is my age. Closer to home, I also met Nicholas and Calan from SMK USJ 12. How nice is was to find that they were frisbee fanatics like Xin Wei and I. Calan also knew my friend from Johor, Rachel Sia. How small this world is! My friend, Rebecca even had a friend that she reconnected with while most of us made some new buddies. It was a good way to get to know students from other schools through this event. I hoped for an activity where we could mingle but there was not much time for that.

After the short yet entertaining drama from the 5 Balau students, the event was then continued with the book sharing for the two books "Animal Farm" by George Orwell and "Inferno" by Dan Drown. The books were interesting books on different topics. One on how animals run their world and soon become what they sought to abolish but the animals do not know what is right or wrong anymore. They feel it is fair that their kind is leading them but do not realise they get less food than before the animals took over. Inferno about a debatable topic where a disease is released into the world to make a third(if not mistaken) of the population infertile that would contribute to stop the world from perishing due to the overpopulation of humans. The participants were sporting and shared their thoughts of the book combined with some recent topics. It was good to let them express but some of the participants were not so cooperative.

At the end of the event, many pictures and selfies were taken. Huge group photos of the participants and committee members taken separately. There was cake for the teachers and committee members courtesy of one of the teachers. The event was a success! We hope the schools that participated had a good time. I enjoyed myself with my friends. Even though it was just a one day event, it was really tiring. I crashed in bed really early that night and had a good night's sleep. Hopefully there are more events like this to come in the future. With that, I end my post for today. Cheers, till the next post!

Post Freedom Writers

Recently, we class got to watch the movie "The Freedom Writers". It was interesting and very moving. I felt it meant a lot to us because the story was about this class of students that were our age but on the other side of the spectrum. An integrated high school with students that were involved in gangs, drug trafficking and more. These kids fought for their lives every day. They just hoped to live another day from where they came from. It brought a new meaning to life for the students of 5 Batai.

Our dear teacher asked us to write about some of the topics in the movie. First is prejudices found in the movie. One clear example was the fact these different gangs, cliques and races had a problem with each other. The Blacks prejudice against the Latinos and other races. This was without a valid reason or knowledge. It was just because they thought they were here first and "they" were invading their land. Many prejudices are still present in the world today like racism and sexism. A prejudice where you have to protect your own kind that Eva had to follow was also mentioned in the movie. Eva was instructed to protect the people like her father by him. She had lie to protect Paco from the
court of Law but in the end Eva did what was right. She may have had lost her family of Latinos but her classmates who were once divided, came together and showed her that they are her family and that she will never be alone.

Secondly, there was stereotyping in the movie as well. The perfect stereotype seen was when Miss Gruwell's husband said "I can't be your wife." after she asked him to support her like wives do. The stereotype of husbands go to work and wives stay at home to support the husband is still present in society. However, the people have changed and women have become more independent to get their own jobs. In some cases, the women achieve more than men and earn more than them too. Truthfully, in my opinion, this stereotype should not be upheld because it is all down to the mutual agreement of a husband and wife that keeps them together. In the movie, I feel that the husband should have gave Miss Gruwell a chance and told her how he felt about her working so late and et cetera .

Next up is the topic of discrimination. The whole movie was filled with discrimination of many sorts. Firstly, there was the example of discrimination - harassment. Inappropriate jokes, insults, name-calling was seen clearly in the movie. They also displayed behaviour where the would fight with other races just because the school was in chaos. There was also a cartoon drawn by Tito in class of an inappropriate cartoon on Jamal with big fat lips "kissing up" to Miss Gruwell. When Miss Gruwell saw the drawing, how raged she was. She mentioned the Holocaust and drawings of the Jews with big fat noses in the papers. She talked about the greatest gang in history which took over countries that did all those stuff to get rid of their enemies. This was to prove to the class discrimination was bad.  Other examples of discrimination in real life is discrimination in hiring, housing, sex discrimination and wage discrimination.

Lastly there were examples of segregation presented in "The Freedom Writers" movie. This is clearly seen in Eva's monologue at the start of the movie. She states that there are the different type of cliques "latino's, china town, the ghetto, and a white kid" in school. There are also cliques in my school but I feel that we are pretty united due to the flexibility of the students and open mindedness of the our generation. Then again, it could just be my year. People who are new have to try to fit in to a clique to feel welcome. This brings us to the psychological factor of wanting to belong. The movie really shows the big contrast between the class when they first started out and after Miss Gruwell brought them together. At the start of the year, the students came in and sat in their cliques but Miss
Gruwell changes that when she moved the around. I felt it was a good first step for her. In the end, you can see the class worked together to raise fund to bring Miep Gies to their school and were all united on bringing Miss Gruwell back for their Junior and Senior year.

In our world today, you still see all these - prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination and segregation throughout the society. The different levels of them in the various places. Relating to another movie "The Duff" (it is PG13 in US but was not shown in Malaysia due to certain parts of the movie), we should all learn to love ourselves and ignore the labels on us as well as the cliques we are in. High school is a vicious environment. With that I end my post, till next post! Cheers.

How A Bad Day Is

I just want to share with you how a bad evening/night, in specific, occurs in my house. I do not know how you would feel in my shoes but you can try to see from my point of view.

Let us start with waking up in the morning. Eyelid flutter open and the feeling of the sunlight stream in from the window. I lie under the covers waiting for my alarm to go off but it does not. Too early again. I get up either by body clock or awoken by someone moving around in "my" room. I check my phone and it lies there beside me. I remember what I did last night. Must have forgot to put it on the table again.

I fall asleep again into light sleep. Being awoken the moment my mother tries to pry my phone from my hands. I must have dozed off again with it there. In the end, I get up and succumb to the every morning rituals of brushing my teeth, washing my face, brushing my hair, breakfast and just aimlessly walking around my house or room.

Back to my room after breakfast to finish up the homework which are due to my horrible habit of procrastination. It is bad indeed. Why don't I finish it during the weekdays? Hard habit to break. My family and I leave the house to obtain our meal of the day, lunch. Lunch then tuition for me but grocery shopping for my brother and mother. All sunny and no storm cloud in sight, for now.

The food churn in my digestive system and the drowsiness kicks in. This unbearable feeling of wanting to nap with the relaxing yet piercing cold air circulating the room makes tuition class slightly less appealing. My brain is on the verge of shutting off. Deja vu moment when I realise I have seen this in my dreams before. How quaint.

I am greeted with the breeze that tags along with the million of rain droplets pounding on the roofs, roads, cars and people as I exit the tuition centre. No softball due to the rain and thus I go home to do my several miscellaneous things.

The bad day starts when my mother calls me down to help her cook. For your information, she only cooks on some Sundays. This week she wants to teach my brother and I new things. I comply by walking downstairs and helping but my brother still has his butt glued to the chair in front of the computer. League of Legends again. I do not know why she flared up when I was just telling her about the computer.

She magically presumed I was complaining about the computer and my brother. She started shouting on top of her voice. You could feel the air around me shake and shiver in fear. You can hear her voice echo slightly. This continues to go on as she cooks. It is then I realise, my family members are quite temperamental. I think to myself "I should just keep quiet next time." Sometimes you just have to keep quiet and let everything swirl around you violently as you wait the storm out underneath that small piece palm leaf. Dangerous isn't it?

I had to use the computer to play these brain games from the Lumosity web page. Not so great when you have someone babbling and talking about other children of her friends along with their achievements and discipline. How they study by themselves even when their parents are away at work, not play computer games and like somebody she knows. How they are not involved in any relationships and their amazing jobs, scholarships.

The moment someone shouts at you something about you not thinking or using your brain. We all know people say stupid things that they do not really mean when they are angry. It just slip of the tongue or heat of the moment. Does it make you feel slightly dumber than you really are? Does it lower your self esteem? People expect so much higher than what you are but are never satisfied with what you do.

This is how life is sometimes. You look down on yourself and when they find out you do, they scold you. You just never have the words to explain to them that you are part of the cause. Sadly if you do they get angrier in most cases. You just pour oil into fire and end up burning yourself to a crisp.

I heard from someone that whenever I write, I always write in a very sad tone. I hold on to the bad past and I just cannot remember most of the memories. It gets jumbled up and becomes a messy blot of ink in my mind. No longer words or pictures but a blur of letters and colours. I am mad and sad? Perchance.
